How much protein do I need daily?Updated 2 years ago
One of the most common questions asked is "how much protein do I need daily?" In short, there’s no blanket answer as everyone’s personal protein requirements vary depending on a number of factors such as height, weight, goals and training program. Nevertheless, there are some indicators that can act as a general guide. The world health organisation recommends approximately 0.66g of protein per 1kg of bodyweight. However, it is important to note that this recommendation is the suggested protein amount to sustain life, not for performance and does not take into account the effects of strength and cardiovascular training on the body.
The International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) recommends between 1.5g to 2g per 1kg of bodyweight for individuals looking to gain lean muscle mass and regularly perform physically exerting exercise. This would only be advised if the individual does not have any renal (kidney issues) and no other reason not to increase their protein intake.
